Forces on inclined planes

The idea

Resolve a force FF at angle θ\theta into Fcos⁡θF\cos\theta along the direction and Fsin⁡θF\sin\theta perpendicular to it. On a slope at angle α\alpha, weight splits into mgsin⁡αmg\sin\alpha down the slope and mgcos⁡αmg\cos\alpha into it.

  1. Draw the forces; choose directions along and perpendicular to the slope.
  2. Resolve every force in each direction.
  3. Perpendicular: forces balance (R=mgcos⁡αR = mg\cos\alpha if nothing else acts). Along: F=maF = ma.

Watch out The normal reaction on a slope is mgcos⁡αmg\cos\alpha, not mgmg.

Worked example

A 5 kg5\text{ kg} block slides down a smooth slope at 30∘30^\circ. Find its acceleration.

  1. Down the slope: 5gsin⁡30∘=24.5 N5g\sin 30^\circ = 24.5\text{ N}.
  2. 24.5=5a24.5 = 5a.
  3. a=4.9 m s−2a = 4.9\text{ m s}^{-2}.

Answer 4.9 m s−24.9\text{ m s}^{-2}
