Stationary points and optimisation

The idea

At a stationary point dydx=0\frac{dy}{dx} = 0. The second derivative tells you which kind: d2ydx2>0\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} > 0 is a minimum, <0< 0 a maximum. For optimisation, write the quantity in one variable, differentiate and set to zero.

  1. Differentiate and solve dydx=0\frac{dy}{dx} = 0.
  2. Find yy at each solution.
  3. Use d2ydx2\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} to decide maximum or minimum.

Watch out If d2ydx2=0\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 0, the test fails: check the gradient on either side.

Worked example

Find and classify the stationary points of y=x3−3x2−9x+5y = x^3 - 3x^2 - 9x + 5.

  1. dydx=3x2−6x−9=3(x−3)(x+1)=0\frac{dy}{dx} = 3x^2 - 6x - 9 = 3(x - 3)(x + 1) = 0, so x=3x = 3 or x=−1x = -1.
  2. y(3)=−22y(3) = -22 and y(−1)=10y(-1) = 10.
  3. d2ydx2=6x−6\frac{d^2y}{dx^2} = 6x - 6: 12>012 > 0 at x=3x = 3 (minimum), −12<0-12 < 0 at x=−1x = -1 (maximum).

Answer Maximum (−1,10)(-1, 10), minimum (3,−22)(3, -22)
