Equation of a circle

The idea

A circle with centre (a,b)(a, b) and radius rr is (x−a)2+(y−b)2=r2(x - a)^2 + (y - b)^2 = r^2. Complete the square in xx and in yy to find the centre and radius. A tangent is perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact.

  1. Group the xx terms and the yy terms, then complete the square for each.
  2. Move the constants to the right to get r2r^2.
  3. For a tangent, find the radius gradient and take its negative reciprocal.

Watch out (x+4)2(x + 4)^2 means the centre has x=−4x = -4: the signs flip.

See it worked

Worked example

Find the centre and radius of x2+y2−6x+4y−12=0x^2 + y^2 - 6x + 4y - 12 = 0.

  1. (x−3)2−9+(y+2)2−4−12=0(x - 3)^2 - 9 + (y + 2)^2 - 4 - 12 = 0.
  2. (x−3)2+(y+2)2=25(x - 3)^2 + (y + 2)^2 = 25.
  3. Centre (3,−2)(3, -2), radius 55.

Answer Centre (3,−2)(3, -2), radius 55

Question 1Non-calculator3 marks

Find the centre of the circle x2+y2+8x−2y−8=0x^2 + y^2 + 8x - 2y - 8 = 0.

Question 2Non-calculator3 marks

Find the radius of the circle x2+y2−10x+6y+18=0x^2 + y^2 - 10x + 6y + 18 = 0.

Question 3Non-calculator3 marks

Find the equation of the tangent to (x−1)2+(y−2)2=25(x - 1)^2 + (y - 2)^2 = 25 at (4,6)(4, 6), in the form ax+by=cax + by = c.
