Straight lines and gradients

The idea

A line through (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) with gradient mm is y−y1=m(x−x1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1). Parallel lines share a gradient; perpendicular gradients multiply to −1-1, so the normal gradient is −1m-\frac{1}{m}.

  1. Find the gradient: m=y2−y1x2−x1m = \frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}, or rearrange to y=mx+cy = mx + c.
  2. Use y−y1=m(x−x1)y - y_1 = m(x - x_1) with a point on the line.
  3. Give the form asked for, such as ax+by+c=0ax + by + c = 0 with integers.

Watch out Rearrange 3x+4y=123x + 4y = 12 before reading the gradient: it is −34-\frac{3}{4}, not 33.

See it worked

Worked example

Find the perpendicular bisector of A(1,5)A(1, 5) and B(4,−1)B(4, -1).

  1. Gradient of ABAB: −1−54−1=−2\frac{-1 - 5}{4 - 1} = -2, so the perpendicular gradient is 12\frac{1}{2}.
  2. Midpoint: (52,2)\left(\frac{5}{2}, 2\right).
  3. y−2=12(x−52)y - 2 = \frac{1}{2}\left(x - \frac{5}{2}\right), which gives 2x−4y+3=02x - 4y + 3 = 0.

Answer 2x−4y+3=02x - 4y + 3 = 0
