Exponential graphs

The idea

y=ekxy = e^{kx} passes through (0,1)(0, 1) and has the xx-axis as an asymptote. If k>0k > 0 it grows; if k<0k < 0 it decays. Adding a constant moves the asymptote: y=Aekx+cy = Ae^{kx} + c has asymptote y=cy = c. The gradient of ekxe^{kx} is kekxke^{kx}.

  1. Put x=0x = 0 for the yy-intercept: A+cA + c.
  2. The asymptote is y=cy = c.
  3. The sign of kk tells you growth or decay.

Watch out An added constant moves the asymptote off the xx-axis.

Worked example

Describe the graph of y=3e−x+2y = 3e^{-x} + 2.

  1. yy-intercept: 3+2=53 + 2 = 5.
  2. As xx grows, 3e−x→03e^{-x} \to 0, so the asymptote is y=2y = 2.
  3. k=−1<0k = -1 < 0, so the curve decreases towards y=2y = 2.

Answer Through (0,5)(0, 5), decreasing towards the asymptote y=2y = 2
