Radians, arcs and sectors

The idea

π\pi radians =180∘= 180^\circ. In radians the formulae are short: arc length s=rθs = r\theta and sector area A=12r2θA = \frac{1}{2}r^2\theta.

  1. Convert degrees to radians by multiplying by π180\frac{\pi}{180}.
  2. Use s=rθs = r\theta and A=12r2θA = \frac{1}{2}r^2\theta with θ\theta in radians.
  3. For a segment, subtract the triangle 12r2sin⁡θ\frac{1}{2}r^2\sin\theta from the sector.

Watch out s=rθs = r\theta only works with θ\theta in radians.

Worked example

A sector has radius 6 cm6\text{ cm} and angle 1.21.2 radians. Find its arc length and area.

  1. s=rθ=6×1.2=7.2 cms = r\theta = 6 \times 1.2 = 7.2\text{ cm}.
  2. A=12×62×1.2A = \frac{1}{2} \times 6^2 \times 1.2.
  3. =21.6 cm2= 21.6\text{ cm}^2.

Answer Arc 7.2 cm7.2\text{ cm}, area 21.6 cm221.6\text{ cm}^2
