Indices and surds

The idea

Index laws work for any powers: am×an=am+na^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}, a−n=1ana^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n} and amn=(an)ma^{\frac{m}{n}} = (\sqrt[n]{a})^m. Surds stay exact: simplify ab=ab\sqrt{ab} = \sqrt{a}\sqrt{b} and rationalise denominators.

  1. Write every number as a power of the same base when you can: 8=238 = 2^3.
  2. Take square factors out of a surd: 50=52\sqrt{50} = 5\sqrt{2}.
  3. Rationalise 1a+b\frac{1}{a + \sqrt{b}} by multiplying top and bottom by a−ba - \sqrt{b}.

Watch out Keep answers exact until the end: a rounded decimal loses the marks for 'exact'.

See it worked

Worked example

Write 83−5\frac{8}{3 - \sqrt{5}} in the form a+b5a + b\sqrt{5}.

  1. Multiply top and bottom by 3+53 + \sqrt{5}: 8(3+5)(3−5)(3+5)\frac{8(3 + \sqrt{5})}{(3 - \sqrt{5})(3 + \sqrt{5})}.
  2. The bottom is 9−5=49 - 5 = 4.
  3. 8(3+5)4=2(3+5)=6+25\frac{8(3 + \sqrt{5})}{4} = 2(3 + \sqrt{5}) = 6 + 2\sqrt{5}.

Answer 6+256 + 2\sqrt{5}

Your turn

Question 1Non-calculator3 marks

Find the exact value of 27−2327^{-\frac{2}{3}}.

Question 2Non-calculator3 marks

Simplify 75−12\sqrt{75} - \sqrt{12}, giving your answer in the form k3k\sqrt{3}.

Question 3Non-calculator3 marks

Solve 2x+1=8x−12^{x+1} = 8^{x-1}.
