Quadratics and the discriminant

The idea

Completing the square, a(x+p)2+qa(x + p)^2 + q, shows the turning point (−p,q)(-p, q). The discriminant b2−4acb^2 - 4ac counts the real roots: positive gives two, zero gives one repeated root, negative gives none.

  1. Rearrange to ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0 and read aa, bb and cc with their signs.
  2. Use the condition: b2−4ac>0b^2 - 4ac > 0, =0= 0 or <0< 0.
  3. Solve the resulting equation or inequality for the unknown constant.

Watch out Real roots means b2−4ac≥0b^2 - 4ac \ge 0; two distinct real roots means >0> 0.

Worked example

Find the values of kk for which x2+kx+9=0x^2 + kx + 9 = 0 has equal roots.

  1. Equal roots means b2−4ac=0b^2 - 4ac = 0.
  2. k2−4(1)(9)=0k^2 - 4(1)(9) = 0, so k2=36k^2 = 36.
  3. k=6k = 6 or k=−6k = -6.

Answer k=±6k = \pm 6

Your turn

Question 1Non-calculator3 marks

Write x2−8x+5x^2 - 8x + 5 in the form (x−a)2−b(x - a)^2 - b. Hence give the coordinates of the turning point of y=x2−8x+5y = x^2 - 8x + 5.

Question 2Non-calculator3 marks

Find the set of values of kk for which x2+4x+k=0x^2 + 4x + k = 0 has two distinct real roots.

Question 3Non-calculator3 marks

Work out the discriminant of 3x2−5x+43x^2 - 5x + 4. How many real roots does 3x2−5x+4=03x^2 - 5x + 4 = 0 have?
