Binomial expansion

The idea

(a+b)n=an+(n1)an−1b+(n2)an−2b2+⋯+bn(a + b)^n = a^n + \binom{n}{1}a^{n-1}b + \binom{n}{2}a^{n-2}b^2 + \dots + b^nThe term in brb^r is (nr)an−rbr\binom{n}{r}a^{n-r}b^r.

  1. Write the general term (nr)an−rbr\binom{n}{r}a^{n-r}b^r.
  2. Choose rr to give the power of xx you want.
  3. Raise the whole of bb, coefficient and sign included, to the power rr.

Watch out In (1+2x)6(1 + 2x)^6, the x3x^3 term uses (2x)3=8x3(2x)^3 = 8x^3, not 2x32x^3.

See it worked

Worked example

Find the first three terms of (2+x)4(2 + x)^4.

  1. 24=162^4 = 16.
  2. (41)23x=32x\binom{4}{1}2^3x = 32x.
  3. (42)22x2=24x2\binom{4}{2}2^2x^2 = 24x^2.

Answer 16+32x+24x216 + 32x + 24x^2
