Integration by substitution

The idea

Substitution turns an integral into a simpler one in a new variable uu. It works well when the derivative of an inner function also appears: in ∫2x(x2+1)4 dx\int 2x(x^2 + 1)^4\,dx, use u=x2+1u = x^2 + 1 because dudx=2x\frac{du}{dx} = 2x.

  1. Choose uu (often the inside of a bracket or a power).
  2. Replace dxdx using dudx\frac{du}{dx}, so no xx is left.
  3. Integrate in uu. Change the limits to uu-values, or substitute back.

Watch out Change the limits when you change the variable, or go back to xx before using them.

Worked example

Find ∫2x(x2+1)4 dx\int 2x(x^2 + 1)^4\,dx.

  1. u=x2+1u = x^2 + 1, so du=2x dxdu = 2x\,dx.
  2. ∫u4 du=u55\int u^4\,du = \frac{u^5}{5}.
  3. =(x2+1)55+c= \frac{(x^2 + 1)^5}{5} + c.

Answer 15(x2+1)5+c\frac{1}{5}(x^2 + 1)^5 + c
