Integrating fractions

The idea

∫1ax+b dx=1aln⁡∣ax+b∣+c\int \frac{1}{ax + b}\,dx = \frac{1}{a}\ln|ax + b| + c. More complicated fractions are split into partial fractions first, then each part integrates to a logarithm.

  1. If the denominator factorises, split into partial fractions.
  2. Integrate each term: kax+b→kaln⁡∣ax+b∣\frac{k}{ax + b} \to \frac{k}{a}\ln|ax + b|.
  3. Combine the logs with the log laws.

Watch out Divide by the coefficient of xx in the denominator.

Worked example

Find ∫32x+1 dx\int \frac{3}{2x + 1}\,dx.

  1. The form is kax+b\frac{k}{ax + b} with k=3k = 3, a=2a = 2.
  2. 32ln⁡∣2x+1∣\frac{3}{2}\ln|2x + 1|.
  3. +c+ c.

Answer 32ln⁡∣2x+1∣+c\frac{3}{2}\ln|2x + 1| + c
