Product, quotient and chain rules

The idea

Chain rule: dydx=dydu×dudx\frac{dy}{dx} = \frac{dy}{du} \times \frac{du}{dx}. Product rule: (uv)′=u′v+uv′(uv)' = u'v + uv'. Quotient rule: (uv)′=u′v−uv′v2\left(\frac{u}{v}\right)' = \frac{u'v - uv'}{v^2}.

  1. Spot the structure: a function inside a function (chain), two multiplied (product) or divided (quotient).
  2. Write uu, vv and their derivatives.
  3. Substitute into the rule and simplify.

Watch out In the chain rule, multiply by the derivative of the inside.

Worked example

Differentiate y=x2e3xy = x^2e^{3x}.

  1. u=x2u = x^2, v=e3xv = e^{3x}; u′=2xu' = 2x, v′=3e3xv' = 3e^{3x}.
  2. dydx=2xe3x+3x2e3x\frac{dy}{dx} = 2xe^{3x} + 3x^2e^{3x}.
  3. =xe3x(2+3x)= xe^{3x}(2 + 3x).

Answer xe3x(2+3x)xe^{3x}(2 + 3x)
