Using logs to find a model

The idea

Taking logs turns curves into straight lines. y=axny = ax^n gives log⁡y=log⁡a+nlog⁡x\log y = \log a + n\log x: plot log⁡y\log y against log⁡x\log x, gradient nn, intercept log⁡a\log a. y=abxy = ab^x gives log⁡y=log⁡a+xlog⁡b\log y = \log a + x\log b: plot log⁡y\log y against xx.

  1. Take logs of both sides and match to Y=mX+cY = mX + c.
  2. Read the gradient and intercept from the line.
  3. Undo the logs: a=10intercepta = 10^{\text{intercept}}.

Watch out The intercept is log⁡a\log a, not aa: raise 1010 to it.

See it worked

Worked example

y=axny = ax^n. A graph of log⁡10y\log_{10} y against log⁡10x\log_{10} x is a straight line with gradient 33 and intercept 0.50.5. Find aa and nn.

  1. log⁡y=log⁡a+nlog⁡x\log y = \log a + n\log x, so n=3n = 3.
  2. log⁡a=0.5\log a = 0.5.
  3. a=100.5=3.16a = 10^{0.5} = 3.16 (3 s.f.).

Answer a=3.16a = 3.16, n=3n = 3

Your turn

Question 1Calculator allowed3 marks

y=abxy = ab^x and log⁡10y=0.3+0.2x\log_{10} y = 0.3 + 0.2x. Find bb to 3 significant figures.

Question 2Calculator allowed3 marks

y=axny = ax^n. A graph of log⁡10y\log_{10} y against log⁡10x\log_{10} x has intercept 0.40.4. Find aa to 3 significant figures.

Question 3Non-calculator3 marks

y=axny = ax^n. The points (0,0.7)(0, 0.7) and (2,4.7)(2, 4.7) lie on the graph of log⁡10y\log_{10} y against log⁡10x\log_{10} x. Find nn.
