Binomial expansion for any power

The idea

For negative and fractional nn, when ∣x∣<1|x| < 1:(1+x)n=1+nx+n(n−1)2!x2+n(n−1)(n−2)3!x3+…(1 + x)^n = 1 + nx + \frac{n(n - 1)}{2!}x^2 + \frac{n(n - 1)(n - 2)}{3!}x^3 + \dotsFor (a+bx)n(a + bx)^n, take out ana^n first.

  1. Write it as an(1+bax)na^n\left(1 + \frac{b}{a}x\right)^n.
  2. Expand with bax\frac{b}{a}x in place of xx, keeping the brackets.
  3. State the validity: ∣bax∣<1\left|\frac{b}{a}x\right| < 1.

Watch out Factor out ana^n, not aa, from (a+bx)n(a + bx)^n.

See it worked

Worked example

Expand (1−2x)12(1 - 2x)^{\frac{1}{2}} up to the x2x^2 term.

  1. n=12n = \frac{1}{2}, with −2x-2x for xx.
  2. 1+12(−2x)+12(−12)2(−2x)21 + \frac{1}{2}(-2x) + \frac{\frac{1}{2}(-\frac{1}{2})}{2}(-2x)^2.
  3. =1−x−12x2= 1 - x - \frac{1}{2}x^2, valid for ∣x∣<12|x| < \frac{1}{2}.

Answer 1−x−12x21 - x - \frac{1}{2}x^2
