Series in real-life models

The idea

Steady increases make arithmetic series: a salary rising by the same amount each year. Percentage changes make geometric series: savings growing by 3%3\% a year, or a ball bouncing to 60%60\% of its height.

  1. Decide: same amount each time (arithmetic) or same percentage (geometric).
  2. Write aa and dd or rr from the situation.
  3. Check which term or how many terms the question means.

Watch out Count carefully: the salary in year 55 is the 5th term, a+4da + 4d or ar4ar^4.

Worked example

A salary starts at £25 000\text{£}25\,000 and rises by 3%3\% each year. Find the salary in year 55.

  1. Geometric: a=25 000a = 25\,000, r=1.03r = 1.03.
  2. Year 55 is u5=25 000×1.034u_5 = 25\,000 \times 1.03^4.
  3. =£28 137.72= \text{£}28\,137.72.

Answer £28 137.72\text{£}28\,137.72
