Correlation and regression

The idea

A regression line y=a+bxy = a + bx predicts yy from xx. The gradient bb is the change in yy for each extra unit of xx, in context. Predictions inside the data range (interpolation) are reliable; outside it (extrapolation) they are not.

  1. Substitute the xx-value into the line.
  2. Interpret bb with units: 'each extra hour adds bb marks'.
  3. Check whether xx is inside the range of the data.

Watch out Correlation does not show that one variable causes the other.

See it worked

Worked example

The regression line of score ss on hours hh is s=12.5+0.8hs = 12.5 + 0.8h, for hh from 55 to 4040. Interpret 0.80.8 and estimate ss when h=20h = 20.

  1. 0.80.8: each extra hour is linked to 0.80.8 more marks.
  2. s=12.5+0.8×20=28.5s = 12.5 + 0.8 \times 20 = 28.5.
  3. 2020 is inside the data range, so the estimate is reliable.

Answer 0.80.8 marks per hour; s=28.5s = 28.5

Your turn

Question 1Non-calculator3 marks

The regression line of yy on xx is y=3.2+1.5xy = 3.2 + 1.5x. Estimate yy when x=10x = 10.

Question 2Non-calculator3 marks

The regression line of distance dd on time tt is d=2.4t+1.1d = 2.4t + 1.1. By how much does dd increase when tt increases by 55?

Question 3Non-calculator3 marks

A regression line was found from daily temperatures between 5∘5^\circC and 25∘25^\circC. Explain why using it to predict sales at 40∘40^\circC is unreliable.

Write your answer, then show the working
  1. The data only covers 5∘5^\circC to 25∘25^\circC.
  2. 40∘40^\circC is outside that range: this is extrapolation.
  3. The relationship may not continue in the same way, so the prediction is unreliable.

Answer 40∘40^\circC is outside the data range, so it is extrapolation
