Standard deviation and coding

The idea

Variance =∑x2n−xˉ2= \frac{\sum x^2}{n} - \bar{x}^2 and the standard deviation is its square root. Coding y=x−aby = \frac{x - a}{b} changes the mean the same way but the standard deviation only by the division: σx=b σy\sigma_x = b\,\sigma_y.

  1. Find xˉ=∑xn\bar{x} = \frac{\sum x}{n}.
  2. Variance =∑x2n−xˉ2= \frac{\sum x^2}{n} - \bar{x}^2; take the square root for the standard deviation.
  3. To undo coding: xˉ=a+byˉ\bar{x} = a + b\bar{y} and σx=bσy\sigma_x = b\sigma_y.

Watch out Adding or subtracting a constant does not change the standard deviation.

See it worked

Worked example

n=10n = 10, ∑x=60\sum x = 60 and ∑x2=420\sum x^2 = 420. Find the mean and standard deviation.

  1. xˉ=6010=6\bar{x} = \frac{60}{10} = 6.
  2. Variance =42010−62=42−36=6= \frac{420}{10} - 6^2 = 42 - 36 = 6.
  3. Standard deviation =6=2.45= \sqrt{6} = 2.45 (3 s.f.).

Answer Mean 66, standard deviation 2.452.45
