Harder trig equations

The idea

Use identities to rewrite an equation in one function of one angle, then factorise. Equations with 2x2x have twice as many solutions in the interval, so solve for 2x2x first over the doubled range.

  1. Replace sin⁡2x\sin 2x, cos⁡2x\cos 2x or sec⁡2x\sec^2 x using an identity.
  2. Factorise; keep every factor, including sin⁡x=0\sin x = 0 or cos⁡x=0\cos x = 0.
  3. List every solution in the interval.

Watch out Dividing by sin⁡x\sin x or cos⁡x\cos x throws away solutions: factorise instead.

Worked example

Solve 2sin⁡2θ=cos⁡θ2\sin 2\theta = \cos\theta for 0∘≤θ<360∘0^\circ \le \theta < 360^\circ.

  1. 4sin⁡θcos⁡θ−cos⁡θ=04\sin\theta\cos\theta - \cos\theta = 0, so cos⁡θ(4sin⁡θ−1)=0\cos\theta(4\sin\theta - 1) = 0.
  2. cos⁡θ=0\cos\theta = 0: 90∘,270∘90^\circ, 270^\circ.
  3. sin⁡θ=14\sin\theta = \frac{1}{4}: 14.5∘,165.5∘14.5^\circ, 165.5^\circ.

Answer θ=14.5∘,90∘,165.5∘,270∘\theta = 14.5^\circ, 90^\circ, 165.5^\circ, 270^\circ
