Small-angle approximations

The idea

When θ\theta is small and in radians: sin⁡θ≈θ\sin\theta \approx \theta, tan⁡θ≈θ\tan\theta \approx \theta and cos⁡θ≈1−θ22\cos\theta \approx 1 - \frac{\theta^2}{2}.

  1. Replace each trig function with its approximation.
  2. For sin⁡kθ\sin k\theta, use kθk\theta; for cos⁡kθ\cos k\theta, use 1−(kθ)221 - \frac{(k\theta)^2}{2}.
  3. Simplify, cancelling powers of θ\theta.

Watch out The angle must be in radians, and cos⁡θ≈1−θ22\cos\theta \approx 1 - \frac{\theta^2}{2}, not 11, when the θ2\theta^2 term matters.

See it worked

Worked example

For small θ\theta, find an approximation for sin⁡2θtan⁡θ1−cos⁡θ\frac{\sin 2\theta\tan\theta}{1 - \cos\theta}.

  1. sin⁡2θ≈2θ\sin 2\theta \approx 2\theta, tan⁡θ≈θ\tan\theta \approx \theta.
  2. 1−cos⁡θ≈θ221 - \cos\theta \approx \frac{\theta^2}{2}.
  3. 2θ212θ2=4\frac{2\theta^2}{\frac{1}{2}\theta^2} = 4.
