Harmonic form: R sin(x + α)

The idea

asin⁡x+bcos⁡xa\sin x + b\cos x can be written as Rsin⁡(x+α)R\sin(x + \alpha) with R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2} and tan⁡α=ba\tan\alpha = \frac{b}{a}. Its maximum is RR and its minimum −R-R, which makes equations and extremes quick.

  1. Expand Rsin⁡(x+α)R\sin(x + \alpha) as Rsin⁡xcos⁡α+Rcos⁡xsin⁡αR\sin x\cos\alpha + R\cos x\sin\alpha and match coefficients.
  2. R=a2+b2R = \sqrt{a^2 + b^2}; tan⁡α=Rsin⁡αRcos⁡α\tan\alpha = \frac{R\sin\alpha}{R\cos\alpha}.
  3. Maximum RR when the sine is 11; minimum −R-R when it is −1-1.

Watch out Check the signs of Rcos⁡αR\cos\alpha and Rsin⁡αR\sin\alpha to put α\alpha in the right quadrant.

Worked example

Write 3sin⁡x+4cos⁡x3\sin x + 4\cos x in the form Rsin⁡(x+α)R\sin(x + \alpha).

  1. Rcos⁡α=3R\cos\alpha = 3 and Rsin⁡α=4R\sin\alpha = 4.
  2. R=9+16=5R = \sqrt{9 + 16} = 5.
  3. tan⁡α=43\tan\alpha = \frac{4}{3}, so α=53.1∘\alpha = 53.1^\circ.

Answer 5sin⁡(x+53.1∘)5\sin(x + 53.1^\circ)
