Area between curves

The idea

The area between two curves is ∫ab(top−bottom) dx\int_a^b (\text{top} - \text{bottom})\,dx, where aa and bb are where they meet. For a parametric curve, the area under it is ∫ydxdt dt\int y\frac{dx}{dt}\,dt with tt-limits.

  1. Solve top == bottom to find the limits.
  2. Integrate top minus bottom between them.
  3. Parametric: replace dxdx with dxdt dt\frac{dx}{dt}\,dt and use tt limits.

Watch out If the curves cross inside the interval, split the area at the crossing.

Worked example

Find the area enclosed by y=x2y = x^2 and y=4y = 4.

  1. They meet at x=±2x = \pm 2.
  2. ∫−22(4−x2) dx=[4x−x33]−22\int_{-2}^{2} (4 - x^2)\,dx = \left[4x - \frac{x^3}{3}\right]_{-2}^{2}.
  3. =163−(−163)=323= \frac{16}{3} - \left(-\frac{16}{3}\right) = \frac{32}{3}.

Answer 323\frac{32}{3}
