Differential equations

The idea

A separable differential equation dydx=f(x)g(y)\frac{dy}{dx} = f(x)g(y) is solved by putting all the yy on one side and all the xx on the other: ∫1g(y) dy=∫f(x) dx\int \frac{1}{g(y)}\,dy = \int f(x)\,dx. Use the initial condition to find the constant.

  1. Separate: 1g(y) dy=f(x) dx\frac{1}{g(y)}\,dy = f(x)\,dx.
  2. Integrate both sides; add one constant.
  3. Use the given values to find it, then make yy the subject.

Watch out Find the constant before you rearrange, and check the answer makes sense in context.

See it worked

Worked example

Solve dydx=2xy\frac{dy}{dx} = 2xy, given y=3y = 3 when x=0x = 0.

  1. ∫1y dy=∫2x dx\int \frac{1}{y}\,dy = \int 2x\,dx, so ln⁡y=x2+c\ln y = x^2 + c.
  2. x=0x = 0, y=3y = 3: c=ln⁡3c = \ln 3.
  3. y=ex2+ln⁡3=3ex2y = e^{x^2 + \ln 3} = 3e^{x^2}.

Answer y=3ex2y = 3e^{x^2}
