Arithmetic series

The idea

An arithmetic sequence adds the same difference dd each time. The nnth term is a+(n−1)da + (n - 1)d and the sum of the first nn terms is Sn=n2[2a+(n−1)d]S_n = \frac{n}{2}[2a + (n - 1)d].

  1. Find aa (first term) and dd (common difference).
  2. For a term: un=a+(n−1)du_n = a + (n - 1)d.
  3. For a sum: Sn=n2[2a+(n−1)d]S_n = \frac{n}{2}[2a + (n - 1)d], or n2(a+l)\frac{n}{2}(a + l) with last term ll.

Watch out nn terms have n−1n - 1 gaps: the nnth term is a+(n−1)da + (n - 1)d.

See it worked

Worked example

An arithmetic series has a=5a = 5 and d=3d = 3. Find the 20th term and the sum of the first 20 terms.

  1. u20=5+19×3=62u_{20} = 5 + 19 \times 3 = 62.
  2. S20=202(5+62)S_{20} = \frac{20}{2}(5 + 62).
  3. =670= 670.

Answer u20=62u_{20} = 62, S20=670S_{20} = 670
