Magnitude and direction of vectors

The idea

The magnitude of ai+bja\mathbf{i} + b\mathbf{j} is a2+b2\sqrt{a^2 + b^2}. Its direction is an angle found with tan⁡θ=ba\tan\theta = \frac{b}{a} and a sketch. A unit vector has magnitude 11: divide the vector by its magnitude.

  1. Sketch the vector to see which quadrant it is in.
  2. Magnitude by Pythagoras.
  3. Angle with i\mathbf{i}: tan⁡−1∣ba∣\tan^{-1}\left|\frac{b}{a}\right|, then adjust using the sketch.

Watch out The magnitude is a length; the direction needs a separate angle.

See it worked

Worked example

Find the magnitude of 5i−12j5\mathbf{i} - 12\mathbf{j} and the angle it makes with i\mathbf{i}.

  1. ∣5i−12j∣=25+144=13|5\mathbf{i} - 12\mathbf{j}| = \sqrt{25 + 144} = 13.
  2. tan⁡θ=125\tan\theta = \frac{12}{5}, so θ=67.4∘\theta = 67.4^\circ.
  3. The vector points below i\mathbf{i}: 67.4∘67.4^\circ below the i\mathbf{i} direction.

Answer 1313; 67.4∘67.4^\circ below i\mathbf{i}
