Vectors and position vectors

The idea

A vector in i,j\mathbf{i}, \mathbf{j} form, such as 3i−2j3\mathbf{i} - 2\mathbf{j}, means 33 across and 22 down. The vector from AA to BB is AB→=b−a\overrightarrow{AB} = \mathbf{b} - \mathbf{a}: end minus start.

  1. Write each point as a position vector from the origin.
  2. Subtract: AB→=OB→−OA→\overrightarrow{AB} = \overrightarrow{OB} - \overrightarrow{OA}.
  3. Add or scale vectors component by component.

Watch out AB→\overrightarrow{AB} is b−a\mathbf{b} - \mathbf{a}, not a+b\mathbf{a} + \mathbf{b}.

Worked example

AA is (2,−1)(2, -1) and BB is (5,3)(5, 3). Find AB→\overrightarrow{AB}.

  1. AB→=b−a\overrightarrow{AB} = \mathbf{b} - \mathbf{a}.
  2. =(5i+3j)−(2i−j)= (5\mathbf{i} + 3\mathbf{j}) - (2\mathbf{i} - \mathbf{j}).
  3. =3i+4j= 3\mathbf{i} + 4\mathbf{j}.

Answer 3i+4j3\mathbf{i} + 4\mathbf{j}

Your turn

Question 1Non-calculator3 marks

OA→=4i−2j\overrightarrow{OA} = 4\mathbf{i} - 2\mathbf{j} and OB→=i+5j\overrightarrow{OB} = \mathbf{i} + 5\mathbf{j}. Find AB→\overrightarrow{AB}. Give the i\mathbf{i} and j\mathbf{j} components.

Question 2Non-calculator3 marks

a=2i+3j\mathbf{a} = 2\mathbf{i} + 3\mathbf{j} and b=i−4j\mathbf{b} = \mathbf{i} - 4\mathbf{j}. Find 3a−2b3\mathbf{a} - 2\mathbf{b}. Give the i\mathbf{i} and j\mathbf{j} components.

Question 3Non-calculator3 marks

AA is (1,7)(1, 7) and BB is (5,−3)(5, -3). Find the position vector of the midpoint of ABAB. Give the i\mathbf{i} and j\mathbf{j} components.
