What percentage do you need for an A* in A-level Maths?

In June 2026 the A* boundary was 260 out of 300 (86.7%) for AQA 7357, 254 (84.7%) for Edexcel 9MA0, 250 (83.3%) for OCR A H240 and 223 out of 275 (81.1%) for OCR B MEI H640. There is no fixed percentage: the boards set boundaries after marking each year.

Is an A-level grade the average of my paper grades?

No. AQA, Pearson and OCR all grade the total mark across your papers. Paper (notional) boundaries are a guide only, so three papers each just above a notional A can still total below the A-level A boundary, or above it.

Do A-levels still use UMS?

Not in England. The reformed linear A-levels in this tool use raw (or, for OCR H645, weighted) total marks. UMS belonged to the old modular A-levels and is still used by some international qualifications, which this tool does not cover.

Why does my Further Maths option change the boundary?

Each combination of optional papers is graded as its own route with its own boundaries. In June 2026 the Edexcel 9FM0 A boundary ranged from 236 to 251 out of 300 depending on the two options taken.

How we work this out

What it does

Enter each paper's raw mark to see your grade on any June's official boundaries, and in every other year.

The 21 current linear A-level specifications in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken in England with AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR, and every legal combination of optional papers (70 routes). Boundaries from each June series from 2017 (AQA and OCR) or 2018 (Pearson) to 2026. There were no summer exams in 2020 or 2021, so those years are absent.

Method

Add the raw marks of every paper on your route. Only OCR Further Maths B (MEI, H645) weights a paper: Core Pure (Y420) is marked out of 144 and multiplied by 1.25, and the weighted total is rounded half up to a whole mark, as OCR's grading rules say.
Compare the total with the qualification boundaries the board printed for the June you pick. A boundary is the lowest total that gets that grade; below the E boundary is a U.
Repeat for every other June with the same route, so you can see how much the grade depends on the year.
Each paper is also compared with that June's notional paper boundary, which boards publish as a guide. These play no part in the A-level grade.
